After Plymouth went the way of the stegosaurus, Chrysler adopted its Dodge Caravan clone, the Voyager. As with the Caravan, the Voyager rides on a 113.3-inch wheelbase, as opposed to the 6-inch-longer wheelbase of the Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country series. Now in its fourth generation (which bowed in 2001), the Voyager offers peppy performance in V6 form, as well as excellent ride and handling qualities. Together, the Voyager, Caravan, Grand Caravan and Town & Country have been Chrysler's biggest success story of the last two decades and have always been at or near the top of the segment's sales charts. This year, Chrysler has slimmed down the lineup to one trim level called the LX. The standard Value Package buys you the 150-horsepower 2.4-liter inline four hooked up to a four-speed automatic. However, if you expect to use the Caravan's seven-passenger capability and/or generous luggage capacity, we'd advise you to go with the Popular Equipment Package, which comes with a 180-horsepower, 3.3-liter V6. In recent years, the competition at the economy end of the minivan segment has gotten stronger, with models offering better performance (in the case of the Mazda MPV) or more value (in the case of the Kia Sedona). Still, we don't feel sorry for Chrysler, as plenty of folks will still be won over by its combination of agile handling, comfy ride and good looks.
