Infiniti introduced the QX4 in 1997 to compete in a growing and highly profitable luxury SUV market. For many years since, the Q has been deemed unworthy of its premium price it commanded over its mechanical and structural twin, the Nissan Pathfinder. Infiniti's main differentiating selling points between the two included an All-Mode four-wheel-drive system and a few other exclusive features. In 2001, Infiniti upped the standard equipment and boosted its power to make it a true contender in relation to its direct competition. At the heart of the QX4 lies a versatile 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 which produces 240-horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. In comparison to its similarly equipped competitors like the Lexus RX300, BMW X5 3.0 and Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Q can boast a horse and torque advantage. However, unlike some of its competitors, Infiniti does not offer a V8 alternative. Carlike feel is superbly rendered for an SUV, with an independent front suspension and a five-link solid axle rear suspension working through pavement-biased tires to create confidence-inspiring levels of road holding. Engine speed-sensitive rack and pinion steering proves quite responsive and a unibody construction keeps chassis flex under control. This driving joy doesn't quite translate to off-road prowess, as we found in a road test that the suspension bottomed out too easily when trying to soak up ruts and deep dips. Overall, the QX4 is satisfying to drive, with a sportier demeanor than most other SUVs. The QX4 offers a myriad of high-tech features like an optional navigation system, encumbered with teensy buttons to control functions, offers a "Birdview" display that we appreciated during a test drive. However, this system is CD-ROM based, a technology quickly being replaced with the new DVD standard that many of the Q's competitors offer. Also available is an entertainment option that offers you a choice between DVD- and VCR-based systems. It includes jacks for gaming systems and a 6.4-inch roof-mounted LCD screen. Another "ooh-aah" feature is an optional Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), a system shared with the Q45 flagship sedan. The system adjusts the vehicle's speed and distance to traffic in front of the car when the cruise control is operated and reacts to traffic speed changes far faster than a driver can, increasing the safety margin for the QX4 driver and passengers. This system combines laser sensors, throttle and brake actuators, keeping a constant distance between the QX4 and cars ahead. Though getting old, the QX4 still offers enough to make it a fair choice in the midsize luxury SUV market. But if you decide the QX4 is for you, why not go for its doppelganger, the Pathfinder? The Infiniti offers more equipment, the intangibles such as a better warranty and mollycoddling customer service reps, and the self-esteem that comes with owning a premium-brand vehicle. But when all is said and done, we would rather stick with the Pathfinder LE, with its lower price, identical engine and underpinnings, similar option list and as nearly as opulent an interior.
