First introduced in 1999 as a more sophisticated sister to the Camry family sedan, the Solara coupe has quietly enjoyed the reputation of most Toyota vehicles -- reliable, well built and conservatively styled. For most types of vehicles, such qualities would be considered desirable, if not optimal, but when it comes to coupes you would hope that sporty, stylish and fun would figure in there as well. With the debut of the second-generation 2004 Solara, Toyota has made an attempt to bring some of those more desirable elements to its midsize coupe. The suspension has been retuned for better handling, a larger V6 offers more power and, although the looks are still cut to appeal to a wide-ranging audience, there are enough new lines to separate it from the slab-sided Camry sedan on which it is based. The result is a second-generation Solara that manages to add a significant measure of fun without sacrificing the traditional elements that made it so appealing the first time around. Although numerous features have been added, the Solara remains a solid value as the price of several models is actually lower than the previous year. Notable additions to the lineup include an SE Sport model with a more aggressive suspension, larger wheels and tires and black graphite interior trim, as well as the availability of the four-cylinder engine with the top-line SLE trim. The Solara's interior fit and finish has been improved over the previous model that was already considered best-in-class. A mix of metallic and satin finishes interspersed with high-quality plastics gives Toyota's midsize coupe a more distinctive, upscale appearance than its Camry sedan counterpart. Rear-seat room is still a bit tight for adults, but usable for short trips. Side airbags are standard on all models, with side curtain airbags that protect both the front and rear passengers an available option. Improvements to the motor mounts effectively eliminate engine vibration and even highway speeds barely turn up much wind or road noise. If mileage is a concern, the standard four-cylinder delivers up to 33 miles per gallon, but for maximum performance, the optional V6 is essential. Although it's still not available in conjunction with a manual transmission, a newly added five-speed automatic combined with a larger version of last year's V6 provides solid all-around performance. With so few midsize coupes on the market, the Solara doesn't have much in the way of competition. But even so, Toyota gave the Solara everything that a buyer could ask for. It may not be the fastest coupe around, nor is it the most distinctive-looking, but when it comes to overall quality, performance and value, there are few coupes that put it all together as well as the 2004 Camry Solara.
